e-toll Tariffs

e-toll Tariff System

The e-toll system will operate as an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. This form of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) is a multi-lane free flow system that allows for tolls to be charged without vehicles having to stop or slow down. There are no physical toll booths. Instead, overhead gantries are fitted with the toll collection equipment that will recognise the vehicle identifier, either the e-tag or the number plate, toll will be deducted with the vehicle identifier and the user will be able to travel without any disruption.

This new infastructure is beneficial to road users because it is an improved system that gives road users a smoother, faster and safer journey with reduced congestions. This is evident in the widening of the freeways to four lanes and in some locations up to six lanes in each direction. It provides median lightning and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) on 185km of road on the Gauteng e-toll network.

With the Variable Messaging Signs (VMS), SANRAL is able to warn road-users of incidents and assists drivers with en-route, up-to-date information. CCTV will shorten the time it takes to report an incident, greatly reducing the response time of emergency services. The Incident Management Services (IMS) will reduce the impact of congestion delays, as well as providing time-crucial medical assistance sooner.

A lot of money was spent on this innovative system which will be beneficial to our road users. It entails so many benefits and I dont see the need to act against it. I wont mind paying the toll.
